The place called Čara is just 20 km distant from Vela Luka, spreading on the hill slopes above a vast field called Čarsko polje. To the south of Čara one will find a village of Zavalatica with numerous apartments available for holiday rental.
In the past, Zavalatica was a summer residence to many a Korčula’s nobleman, the most prominent one being the poet Kanavelić who lived in the 17th century.
The fertile, vineyard-abundant Čarsko polje is favorable for the cultivation of the island-autochthonous Pošip grape - the first Croatian white wine whose geographical origin is legally protected, and the locations of the very best grape are precisely the Čara and Smokvica areas. Pošip is a wine characterized by a bright, golden colour, with high volume of alcohol and a unique aroma of dried apricots and figs.
As one of the five ancient settlements in Korčula (others being Blato, Smokvica, Pupnat and Žrnovo), Čara was mentioned in the Statute of Korčula from 1214 which recommended and commanded the establishment of the guard and the system of defense in the village.
In the village centre stands St Peter’s parish church from the 15th century. The main altar has a painting by the outstanding Venetian artist Jacopo Bassano from the end of the 16th century. A great cypress tree several centuries old grows on a small square in front of the church.
In Čarsko polje, in the midst of vineyards, there is also the church of Our Lady of Čara Field (Gospa od Čarskog polja). It is the main place of pilgrimage on the island with the main festivity taking place on St Jacob’s day, 25 July. The church is also famed for its Gothic ivory reliefs of English origin which, according to tradition, were washed ashore by the sea.
