Lumbarda is situated in the eastern part of the island of Korčula, just 6 km from the town of Korčula. Nested by the sea, on the hill slopes, it is surrounded by vineyards of the renowned white wine Grk. Lumbarda is well known for its sandy beaches Vela Pržina, Bilin Žal and Tatinje. Visitors can find accommodation in apartments, private pensions, a camp and the Lumbarda Hotel, and in the village there are several restaurants, taverns and homesteads serving the island’s specialties.
The sand of the famous Lumbarda’s beaches was brought by winds from the Sahara more than thousands of years ago. Children will take a particular delight in those well-tended beaches. Next to Vela Pržina beach there is also a small restaurant.
In front of Lumbarda there are some twenty islets, frequently visited by windsurfers who take advantage of favorable winds in the channel between Korčula and Pelješac.
The sandy soil surrounding Korčula is beneficial to vineyards of the famed Grk grape. The origins of the grapevine have not been determined yet, but it could easily be one of the oldest species of grape on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. The wine is recognizable by a light green-yellow color with golden reflections and its distinctive slightly bitter bouquet with a touch of toasted almonds aroma. Grk goes best with all sea-food and can also be served as an aperitif.
Lumbarda has a long history. The psephism from Lumbarda, the oldest preserved written document on the territory of Croatia, bears witness to its establishment as a Greek colony in the 3rd century B.C. Today it is kept in the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, while a replica is displayed in the Korčula Municipal museum.
From the 16th century Korčula’s noblemen have been building their summer residences in Lumbarda. Those fortified edifices are commonly called citadels (kašteli), and Nobilo, Kršinić and Milina citadels are still preserved and inhabited.
